“…According to Basta and Camacho (18) , incidence rate is not the best indicator of the dynamic transmission trends of TB, particularly in small populations like indigenous populations. Young and Mirdad (19) found that using incidence rate to assess the levels of transmission of MTB might be limited by the fact that most individuals who are infected with MTB do not develop the disease, and those who become ill might have been infected for months or years.…”

“…It is interesting to note that MTB in the Americas has become a major problem for indigenous communities during colonization by the European peoples. MTB was believed to be a microorganism evolved from M. bovis that causes the same human pathology in cattle; yet new studies have shown that the only difference between the members of the M. tuberculosis Complex corresponds to the polymorphisms in certain genes, suggesting, therefore, that both bacilli evolved in parallel [45].…”

“…Interest in tuberculosis among indigenous peoples has been increasing since 1990. 1,2 In Brazil there are reports of active tuberculosis incidence rates three times higher than the national averages, 2,3 prevalence of latent infection in excess of 40% in the Northern region, [4][5][6] considerable concentration of cases in border regions, 7,8 a drug resistance emergency 8,9 and patterns of recent transmission in 63.5% of cases in Mato Grosso do Sul state (1999)(2000)(2001). 10 The level of these indicators is a result of socio-economic disadvantages, discrimination, prejudice and indigenous people having difficulty in accessing health services.…”
