Tetanus – A Rare But Real Threat

Abstract: Tetanus is a potentially fatal disease of the nervous system arising from toxins produced by Clostridium tetani, an anaerobic bacterium found in soil [1]. Characterized by muscular rigidity, spasms and autonomic dysregulation its identification and, importantly, its prevention remain critical to the welfare of at risk patients. We present the case of a twenty two year old woman who presented to hospital with trismus and generalized muscle spasms three days following a dog bite to the right hand. Here, we discu… Show more

“…Altogether, the present results add to the conclusion that, despite causing strikingly different diseases, TeNT and BoNTs act similarly at cellular level and that drugs impinging on the same neuronal entry step will act similarly independently on the TeNT and BoNT types considered. This conclusion is even more important if one considers the large number of novel BoNTs that are being discovered [1,2,52] and the number of tetanus cases still afflicting people worldwide [31,44].…”

“…Moreover, an intense effort is underway to develop highly purified human monoclonal antibodies [36][37][38][39][40][41], which overcome some drawbacks associated with the use of TIG [36]. Nonetheless, tetanus remains a major killer in many countries where the availability of anti-tetanus vaccine and of antisera are limited [35,[42][43][44]. In addition, TIG is administered intramuscularly and, thus, provides a spectrum of TeNT neutralization restricted to peripheral body fluids.…”

“…Tetanus is a potentially lethal disease caused by toxins produced by Clostridium tetani, which is an anaerobic bacterium commonly found in soil. 1 The toxin attacks/binds to nervous system and blocks inhibitory signals resulting in muscular rigidity, stiffness and spasms. Spasm of masseter muscle causes "lockjaw" that is a unique feature of this disease.…”
