Text as Causal Mediators: Research Design for Causal Estimates of Differential Treatment of Social Groups via Language Aspects

Abstract: Using observed language to understand interpersonal interactions is important in highstakes decision making. We propose a causal research design for observational (nonexperimental) data to estimate the natural direct and indirect effects of social group signals (e.g. race or gender) on speakers' responses with separate aspects of language as causal mediators. We illustrate the promises and challenges of this framework via a theoretical case study of the effect of an advocate's gender on interruptions from justi… Show more

“…Text counterfactuals, drawing from and informing current developments for causal inference in NLP (Keith et al, 2021;Feder et al, 2021;Jin et al, 2021) can be used for training, testing, and explaining models (Wu et al, 2021). We build on research that explores the former -using counterfactually augmented data (CAD) as training examples, to in-vestigate conditions of model robustness and unintended false positive bias.…”

“…Quantitative research means that the data from this study are in the form of numbers, and the analysis method uses statistics to test hypotheses (Disman, Ali, & Barliana, 2017). Causal research describe a particular problem through the process of proving cause-and-effect relationships between variables (Keith et al, 2021) . The unit of analysis in this study is the company.…”

“…With the updated data, we undertake a causal mediation analysis, including speech disfluencies, experience, and ideological alignment as mediators. We calculate the natural direct effects (NDE) and natural indirect effects (NIE) via the assumptions and formulas presented in Keith, Rice and O'Connor (2021). We report the overall results in Table 4.…”
