Texture analysis of magnetic resonance images of the human placenta throughout gestation: A feasibility study

Abstract: As fetal gestational age increases, other modalities such as ultrasound have demonstrated increased levels of heterogeneity in the normal placenta. In this study, we introduce and apply ROI-based texture analysis to a retrospective fetal MRI database to characterize the second-order statistics of placenta and to evaluate the relationship between heterogeneity and gestational age. Positive correlations were observed for several Haralick texture metrics derived from fetal-brain specific T2-weighted and gravid ut… Show more

“…Two studies based on TA have recently been published. One of these studies provided the first characterization of the normal placenta as a function of gestational age, based on the textural properties between gestational ages of 23 to 36 weeks [4]. This study confirmed the increase in placental heterogeneity with gestational age.…”

“…In this article, we presented the imaging extraction used in this work based on recommended standardized nomenclature to promote reproducibility and transparency . Another advantage of this study was the creation of an internal control of normal placental tissue remote from the scar in each a woman as an acknowledgement of the known gestational age‐specific increased heterogeneity of the aging placenta …”

“…The spatial relationship between pixels is defined as: distance = 1, orientations = 0°, 45°, 90°, 135°. We used these 13 texture features because they were found to be relevant for correlating placental heterogeneity by gestational age using MRI …”

“…Specifically, grey-level cooccurrence matrix texture features, known as Haralick texture features, have been used to show an increase in placental heterogeneity throughout the gestational age. 45,46 Image analysis is increasingly combined with machine learning techniques that provide prediction models for examining correlation between clinical characteristics and outcomes. A multitude of machine learning and clustering methods, including Naïve Bayes, K nearest neighbors, k-means, and multilayer perceptron, have been successfully used alongside texture analysis techniques for MRI and US images.…”
