Texture Optimization and Verification for the Thrust Bearing Used in Rotary Compressors Based on a Transient Tribo-Dynamics Model

Abstract: Rotary compressors are designed more and more compact and the compressor cylinder's ambient pressure is designed very high to facilitate oil separation and improve efficiency. However, these designs cause the working condition of the thrust bearing becoming harsher, and severe wear may occur. The present study is aimed at mitigating its wear condition through surface texturing. Based on a transient tribo-dynamics model considering the coupling effect of the journal and thrust bearings, a texture optimization s… Show more

“…Ref. [33] mentioned that due to the influence of fluid inertial force, textures with a depth of more than 10 µm may cause the Reynolds equation to no longer be applicable. In addition, the texture width should be related to the size of the texture unit and designed within the texture unit.…”

“…Truong et al [21] developed a method to measure the thermal behavior of high-speed spindles, which can generate a bearing stiffness matrix while considering thermal expansion effects. In tribology research, Lyu et al [22] , from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, employed three different optimization algorithms to construct a transient dynamic model that coupled journal with thrust bearings for texture optimization studies. The results confirmed that textured thrust bearings exhibit reduced wear depth, thereby improving work efficiency. A team from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology [23] proposed a finite element model based on the coupled Euler-Lagrange (CEL) method to comprehensively explain the anomalous static friction generated by spherical contact with ultra-thin soft coatings.…”

“…The thrust bearings with optimized geometric parameters significantly reduced the contact force and wear depth at high frequency. Mishra et al [41] investigated the tribological behaviors of LST for a scroll compressor within different refrigeration ambients, and the surface texturing showed significant tribological improvements, largely independent of the type of lubricant or refrigerant.…”
