The abundance of HCN in circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars of different chemical type

Abstract: Aims. A multi-transition survey of HCN (sub-) millimeter line emission from a large sample of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of different chemical type is presented. The data are analysed and circumstellar HCN abundances are estimated. The sample stars span a large range of properties such as mass-loss rate and photospheric C/O-ratio. The analysis of the new data allows for more accurate estimates of the circumstellar HCN abundances and puts new constraints on chemical models. Methods. In order to constra… Show more

“…The SO (1 × 10 −6 ), SiO (5 × 10 −6 ), and CS (1 × 10 −6 ; after correcting the 13 CS abundance by the estimated 12 C/ 13 C ≈ 10) abundances all lie in the range reported for AGB CSEs (Danilovich et al 2016;Schöier et al 2013;Velilla Prieto et al 2017), while the H 2 CO abundance (2 × 10 −6 ; assuming an orthoto-para ratio of 3) is about an order of magnitude higher than in IK Tau (Velilla Prieto et al 2017). CH 3 OH has an estimated abundance of 3 × 10 −6 (assuming an E-to-A ratio of 1), almost two orders of magnitude higher than towards the supergiant IRC+10420 (Quintana-Lacaci et al 2016).…”

“…The radius of the CO envelope is determined by models of photodissociation of CO (Mamon et al 1988). The code and modelling method has been used extensively to model the emission lines from various molecules, including CO (e.g., Olofsson et al 2002), SiO (Ramstedt et al 2009), and HCN (Schöier et al 2013).…”

“…In this initial study we do not consider any process of dust condensation and growth, which we postpone to followup works, and we focus on the hydrogen cyanide molecule, for which observational evidence suggests that the formation is not affected by dust grain formation (Schöier et al 2013).…”

“…Indeed, the HCN molecule has been detected in AGB circumstellar envelopes of all chemical types (Schöier et al 2013;Muller et al 2008;Marvel 2005;Bieging, Shaked, & Gensheimer 2000). Using a detailed radiative transfer model Schöier et al (2013) have recently derived the circumstellar HCN abundances for a large sample of AGB stars, spanning a wide range of properties, mainly in terms of chemical types, mass-loss rates, and expansion velocities.…”
