The acute respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract: On the basis of current evidence, and despite the order of magnitude of reported European and USA incidence figures, it seems that the incidence and overall mortality of ARDS has not changed substantially since the original ARDSnet study. The current mortality of adult ARDS is still greater than 40%.

“…68 Because severe hypoxemia is the hallmark of ARDS, various parameters of oxygenation or lung mechanics are assessed as appropriate indicators of disease severity or good predictors of deaths in several studies. 9,10 However, AECC definition may not truly reflect the severity and outcome of this clinical entity due to PaO 2 /FiO 2 may vary in response to ventilator settings, especially for the setting of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP).…”

“…LC patients are at high risk for pneumonia, sequential sepsis and Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Despite improvements in critical care, severe ARDS continues to be associated with significant (~40%) mortality (6, 7). Elderly patients are increasing in prevalence and are at an elevated risk for falls and subsequent complications from traumatic injury.…”

“…Despite considerable progress in the therapeutic strategies over the past two decades, the mortality rate remains high (10, 82, 83). Better understanding of the pathogenesis in ARDS is necessary to develop effective treatments (25).…”
