The AGN Ionization Cones of NGC 5728. I. Excitation and Nuclear Structure

Abstract: We explore the gas morphology and excitation mechanisms of the ionization cones of the Type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Near-IR and optical data from the SINFONI and MUSE IFUs on the VLT are combined with HST optical images, Chandra X-ray data and VLA radio observations. The complex nuclear structure has a star-forming (SF) ring with a diameter of 2 kpc. A radio jet impacts on the ISM at about 200 pc from the nucleus, with the SN remnants in the SF ring also present. Emission-line ratios of [Fe II] and H II sh… Show more

“…This combined with extended morphology following the edges of CO (2-1) emission suggests that the H 2 (1-0) S(1) emission is produced by either X-ray heating from the AGN or shocks as the AGN driven outflow expands into the disk and is consistent with the conclusions of a study of NIR line emission in 62 AGN from long slit spectra (Rodríguez-Ardila et al 2004;Rodríguez-Ardila et al 2005;Riffel et al 2013b). Indeed Durré & Mould (2018) show that this is the case through the use of H 2 excitation diagrams.…”

“…NGC 5728: It is a Seyfert II galaxy that presents two ionization cones produced by a central AGN (e.g., Wilson et al 1993). MUSE observations of this object have been presented in Durré & Mould (2018, 2019. Our emission-line images reveal two ionized cones extending toward the SE and NW from the optical nucleus.…”

“…We reduced archival XShooter spectra 3 using version 2.9.3 of the XShooter pipeline (Modigliani et al 2010) accessed via the Reflex interface, followed by telluric line corrections with molecfit (Smette et al 2015). Mark Durré kindly reduced SINFONI spectra of NGC 5728 as described in Durré & Mould (2018), using the SINFONI data reduction pipeline (version 2.5.2) accessed through the gasgano interface, with telluric correction and flux calibration from standard stars observed at a similar airmass.…”
