The agricultural health study: Factors affecting completion and return of self-administered questionnaires in a large prospective cohort study of pesticide applicators

Abstract: Response rates were examined in a prospective epidemiologic study of individuals, mostly farmers, from Iowa and North Carolina seeking a pesticide applicator license during the period from 1994 through 1996. In the first year of enrollment 16,535 farmers (representing 77% of eligible farmer applicators) enrolled in the study by completing a 17‐page questionnaire administered at a pesticide training session; 47% of the enrolled farmers completed and returned a much longer take‐home questionnaire. “…While over 52,000 farmers completed the enrollment questionnaires, only 44% of these farmers completed the take -home questionnaire. However, a previous analysis revealed that the farmers who completed the take -home questionnaire were, for most characteristics, similar to those who completed only the enrollment questionnaire (Tarone et al, 1997 ). Another limitation is that the AHS cohort was established to investigate potential effects among pesticide applicators and, therefore, the statistics on use of pesticides and other activities presented here may not necessarily represent the total population of farmers in these two states.…”

“…However, a low response rate is not unusual in studies conducted in rural areas. 36 In addition, despite a lower response rate for postal questionnaires compared with interviews, Morgaine et al 37 reported that the 2 methods produced similar health data. Therefore, even with a low response rate the respondents' health data are assumed to be similar to that not collected from nonrespondents.…”
