The AIS-Assisted Collision Avoidance

Abstract: Shipborne AIS provides independent traffic information to the bridge lookout on duty. This study examines the effect of AIS enhanced bridge lookout operation by means of a ship simulator. The two groups of participants, all qualified British deep sea deck officers, undertook identical simulation scenarios, but one group had the AIS on and the other did not. Significant differences were found between the two groups in reading the targets' privileged status and handling the head-on situation. Those with AIS info… Show more

“…In the case of any problems with calibration or signal processing, the information obtained with AIS can be wrong. However, many examples have been presented showing the efficiency of AIS as an anti‐collision tool and for ship monitoring [2, 3].…”

“…AIS in anti-collision processes has been used by many researchers, e.g. Hsu et al (2009), Mou et al (2010), Hansen et al (2013), Silveira et al (2013) and Last et al (2014).…”

“…With the appearance and development of new navigation equipment like AIS [5,6], advanced computer technology, and so forth, the application of intelligent optimization algorithm has been used for collision avoidance strategy searching. Genetic algorithm (GA) is a popular heuristic algorithm, which has been used for many subjects, such as system identification [7,8], supply chain [9], and scheduling problem [10].Ś mierzchalski and Michalewicz [11], Szlapczynski [12], and Szlapczynski and Szlapczynska [13] first made use of genetic algorithm to plan the route of vessel in static or dynamic environment in order to avoid obstacles.…”
