The Alfalfa “Almost Darks” Campaign: Pilot Vla Hi Observations of Five High Mass-to-Light Ratio Systems

Abstract: We present new VLA H I spectral line imaging of five sources discovered by the ALFALFA extragalactic survey. These targets are drawn from a larger sample of systems that were not uniquely identified with optical counterparts during ALFALFA processing, and as such have unusually high H I mass to light ratios. The candidate "Almost Dark" objects fall into four broad categories: 1) objects with nearby H I neighbors that are likely of tidal origin; 2) objects that appear to be part of a system of multiple H I sour… Show more

“…Chengalur, Giovanelli & Haynes 1995, English et al 2010, Cannon et al 2015, which possibly lie on the extreme end of a class of optically dark/dim tidal features. Simulations predict that a tidal object this massive and this far from its parent galaxies should be long-lived (Bournaud & Duc 2006); however, the stellar counterpart to AGC 749170 is much fainter than any simulated object (e.g.…”

“…More recently, several 'dark galaxy' candidates have been reported (e.g., Minchin et al 2007;Oosterloo et al 2013), in particular as part of the ALFALFA survey Haynes et al 2011;Janowiecki et al 2015). While the nature of some of these objects is still uncertain, many other 'dark galaxy' candidates have since either been identified as tidal debris Duc & Bournaud 2008;Cannon et al 2015;Taylor et al 2017), or faint stellar counterparts have been detected in deep optical data .…”

“…While such searches cannot identify passive dwarf galaxies (dSph), such as most Local Group satellites, which lack H (M H /L V ≤ 10 −3 M /L : Spekkens et al 2014), they have the potential of finding gas-rich, potentially star-forming dwarf (dIrr) galaxies (see, e.g., Adams et al 2013Adams et al , 2015Cannon et al 2015;Janowiecki et al 2015).…”
