The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector

Abstract: The ALICE experiment will require some 1200 Readout Chips for the construction of the Silicon Pixel Detector [1] and it has been estimated that approximately 3000 units will require testing. This paper describes the system that was developed for this task.

“…To maintain sufficient ∆t resolution for time-dependent CP violation measurements with the reduced SuperB boost, the vertex resolution is improved by reducing the radius of the innermost layer of SVT (layer-0) down to about 1.5 cm, which is the lower limit allowed by the background rates according to preliminary simulation studies. Two main options are being considered for the layer-0, CMOS monolithic active pixels thin sensors [13] or hybrid pixels detectors [14], while the outer silicon layers are made of microstrips silicon sensors. The starting point for the DCH layout is the BaBar drift chamber, though the design optimization process may eventually end up in a quite different device.…”

“…It also contains an ADC to monitor currents and voltages. The PILOT chip [5] transmits the data and configuration signals from and to the router module [6] in the control room. The GOL chip [7] (Gigabit Optical Link) serializes the data and the RX40 chip [8] acts as a receiver for the signals of the PIN diode inside the optical module.…”
