SUMMARYIn this paper, the problems involved in the process of degeneration of quadrilateral element into triangular element are thoroughly analysed. The contents include the formulation of the geometry mapping induced by collapsing one side of the quadrilateral element and the construction of the shape functions. The study focuses ÿrst on a 4-node bilinear quadrilateral (Q4) element to 3-node constant strain triangular (CST ) element, and then on a 8-node serendipity (Q8) element to 6-node triangular element (T 6). In the analysis, the quadrilateral element and degenerate triangular element are assumed to be enclosed by straight edges. The theoretical results show that there is another better approach to realize the degeneration, and that even for conventional approach of degeneration we can give more reasonable explanation to the unclear problems like the CST property in degenerate CST element and the necessity of the additional terms in degenerate T 6 element.

Radiation grafting of acrylic acid (AA)/Nvinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) binary mixture onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) knittings was investigated by preirradiation technique. The influence of the grafting conditions, such as monomer composition, reaction temperature, and the effect of storage time with temperature after irradiation on the degree of grafting was determined. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy analysis of the grafted knittings confirmed the existence of amide group of NVP in the knittings. The concentration of peroxides and effect of storage time on peroxide concentration were also determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl at different temperatures. There was an increase in surface roughness of grafted PET in comparison to virgin PET as determined by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The grafted knittings were subsequently immobilized with collagen Type I which was further apt for the study of growth and morphology of human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC). The immobilization of collagen on PET knittings has provided an excellent surface for the growth of hMSCs.

Finite element analysis of subsurface damage of ceramic prostheses in simulated intraoral dental resurfacing

Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to investigate the stress fields and the degrees of subsurface damage of ceramic prostheses in simulated intraoral dental resurfacing operations using clinical diamond burs. A two-dimensional finite element model was established with the dental operational parameters and the material properties as input variables. This model enabled to predict the stress fields and to evaluate the depths of subsurface damage in ceramic prostheses as functions of the dental resurfacing operational conditions. The results indicate that the tensile, shear, compressive, and equivalent von Mises stresses were all centered under the diamond bur-specimen contact zone. The maximum values of these stresses were concentrated at the diamond grit exit point, decreasing with an increase in depth of cut. The predicted depths of subsurface damage increased with an increase in both the depth of cut and the maximum chip thickness, in the range of 30-140 microm. Also, the depths of subsurface damage were experimentally measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FEA predictions were found to be in agreement with the SEM experimental observations.
