The analysis of the Corylus, Alnus and Betula pollen seasons in Toruń in 2014 and 2016

Abstract: Abstract. The paper presents the results of the research on the pollen seasons of hazel (Corylus), alder (Alnus) and birch (Betula) in 2014 and 2016. The samples were collected gravimetrically at weekly intervals. The deposition values were converted into the pollen grains concentration in 1 m 3 of air. The analysis of the pollen seasons was conducted based on the properties of the seasons: beginning, end, season duration, annual totals of pollen and maximum concentrations. The courses of the both compared pol… Show more

“…The pollen count of grass is determined by the diversity of local flora and weather conditions, especially by the air temperature and relative humidity (Puc & Puc, 2004). According to numerous authors, temperature in the period preceding pollen shedding has a significant impact on the beginning of the pollen season (Frenguelli, et al 1991;Frei, 1998;Rodriguez-Rajo, et al 2004;Emberlin, et al 2007;Kim, et al 2011;Piotrowska-Weryszko, 2013;Filbrandt-Czaja & Adamska 2018;Kubik-Komar, et al 2018) and this agree with our study.…”

“…The higher the average temperature during this period, the earlier hazel starts shedding pollen. According to numerous authors, temperature in the period preceding pollen shedding has a significant impact on the beginning of the pollen season of trees that start shedding pollen at the turn of winter and spring (Frenguelli et al 1991;Frei, 1998;Rodriguez-Rajo et al 2004;Emberlin et al 2007;Kim et al 2011;Piotrowska-Weryszko 2013;Filbrandt-Czaja and Adamska 2018;Kubik-Komar et al 2018). Also statistically significant correlation coefficients were demonstrated for relative humidity 25-30 days before the season and sunshine hours -180 to 210 before the season (Table 3).…”

“…We chose the widespread shrub species Corylus avellana (hazel) and tree species Alnus glutinosa (common alder) and Betula pendula (silver birch), which are characterized by a high allergenicity of their pollen and the availability of common allergens (cross-reactive Bet v1) (Biedermann et al 2019 ; Niederberger et al 1998 ; Weber 2003 ). These species are monoecious with typical long catkins containing only male flowers (Filbrandt-Czaja and Adamska 2018 ). Hazel and alder flower early in January to March, whereas birch flowers later in March to June (only in northern latitudes).…”
