The anatomy of the Berrettini branch: implications for carpal tunnel release

Abstract: The Berrettini branch can be considered a normal anatomical finding. In 28% of the hands in this study, the branch was proximal to the edge of the distal ligament and, therefore, prone to iatrogenic injury in both one-portal and two-portal endoscopic surgery.

“…This branch has been called the ''Berrettini branch'' by hand surgeons, long after Berrettini's original description (Berrettini and Petrioli, 1741;Stancic et al, 1999). In major anatomy textbooks; however, it is neither described in detail nor is its clinical significance sufficiently emphasized (Drenckhahn and Zenker, 1993;Schiebler et al, 1999;Snell, 2003;Standring, 2005;Moore and Dalley, 2006).…”

“…Not only have the course and the branching pattern of the RC been classified, but the prevalence of the different patterns has been reported to be quite variable (Meals and Shaner, 1983;Bas and Kleinert, 1999;Stancic et al, 1999;Don Griot et al, 2000).…”
