The Anticancer Activity of Sea Buckthorn [Elaeagnus rhamnoides (L.) A. Nelson]

Abstract: Various parts of sea buckthorn [Elaeagnus rhamnoides (L.) A. Nelson], particularly the berries, known also as seaberries, or Siberian pineapples, are characterized by a unique composition of bioactive compounds: phenolic compounds, vitamins (especially vitamin C), unsaturated fatty acids, and phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol. These berries, together with the juices, jams, and oils made from them, have a range of beneficial antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. This short review discusses … Show more

“…Moreover, individual pure compounds demonstrated rather weak effects, suggesting that the total antiproliferative activity of extracts may be due to the synergistic effect of phytochemicals. Most likely, better antiproliferative properties of SBP-W may be attributed to higher concentration of galloylated flavonols (6,7,9), and tanshinlactone derivative (5) ( Table 3), which is in agreement with the previously performed studies [39,57,[66][67][68].…”

“…Both extracts, diluted in the solvents at their maximum acceptable concentration levels, strongly inhibited cancer cell grow ( Figure 4A) without cytotoxic effects on normal epithelia Caco-2 cells ( Figure 4B). The bioactivities of SB extracts and plant components have been widely studied [57]. SB extracts demonstrated antiproliferative activity against colon, breast, leukemia, liver, lung and cancer cell lines [49,[58][59][60][61][62].…”

“…Państwem najmocniej wykorzystującym właściwości prozdrowotne rokitnika są Chiny. W sprzedaży znaleźć można tam głównie soki, oleje, napoje (bezalkoholowe oraz alkoholowe), kosmetyki (balsamy do ciała, kremy, szampony do włosów), leki stosowane w leczeniu kardiopatii niedokrwiennej oraz wrzodów i stanów zapalnych [1]. Pierwsze badania kliniczne dotyczące leczniczego zastosowania rokitnika w okulistyce przeprowadzone zostały w Rosji w 1956 roku [2].…”

“…Pierwsze badania kliniczne dotyczące leczniczego zastosowania rokitnika w okulistyce przeprowadzone zostały w Rosji w 1956 roku [2]. Ekstrakty z rokitnika są tam powszechnie stosowane jako składniki różnych kompozycji leczniczych w dermatologii, stomatologii, okulistyce, weterynarii i kosmetologii [1]. Jednak krajem, który jako pierwszy zapisał rokitnika w swojej farmakopei były Chiny (1977 rok) (The State of Pharmacopoeia Commission of P.R.…”

“…Inzwischen sind mit Sanddornölextrakten viele weitere Studien gemacht worden. Neben positiven Wirkungen auf die Haut und Schleimhäute (u. a. auch des trockenen Auges [7]) wurden Wirkungen auf das Immunsystem beschrieben [8], die Hemmung von Krebswachstum [9], Normalisierung der Blutfette und Verbesserungen des kardiovaskulären Risikos [10].…”
