THE APPEARANCE OF GANGLIOSIDE DURING EMBRYOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE FROG1

Abstract: Abstract— Embryological stages after fertilization were examined for the appearance of gangliosides. In Rana pipiens, gangliosides were found to appear first at the late gastrula, a stage well before any morphological appearance of a nervous system. Furthermore, at this stage and at a later stage, hatching, only two of the four major gangliosides were detected, namely, monosialoganglioside GM1 and disialoganglioside GD1a.

“…This behaviour closely resembles that accurately described in the brain of human foetus (Vanier et al, 1971;Yusuf et al, 1977). It is interesting to observe that the ganglioside pattern in the early rabbit, and human, foetal brain, characterized by the abundance of multisialogangliosides, is somewhat similar to that occurring in adult brain of some fish and amphibian species (Yiamouyiannis and Dain, 1968;Avrova et al, 1979;Hilbig and Rahmann, 1980). It would be interesting to investigate extensively the possible links between brain phylogenesis and mammalian brain ontogenesis, with respect to ganglioside composition and content.…”
