Background/ Aim. The aim of this study was to characterize the physicochemical properties of the commercially available calcium silicate based dental cement Biodentine (Septodont). Methods. Material elucidation included measurements of radiopacity, scanning electron microscopic and x-ray dispersive analyses, wettability, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, microindentation, micro-to nano-porosity, setting time, pH and calcium ion release. Cells were grown on Biodentine surface in order to evaluate its behaviour under biological conditions. Results. The radiopacity of the cement (2.8 mmAl) was below ISO requirement for a root canal filling material. The cement was composed of fine powder with particles similar in size and shape changing from oval to cubic after soaking in simulated body fluid. Calcium silicates and calcium carbonate are the main compounds of the cement. Biodentine demonstrated good micromechanical properties and low porosity attributed to micro porosity with average pores size of 92 μm. Wettability (contact angle=41°), calcium ions release (0.098 μg/cm²) and pH of storage solution (9.07) showed satisfactory characteristics. Cells presented intimate contact with cement particles indicating its good biocompatibility. Conclusion. Biodentine exhibits good mechanical and physicochemical characteristics, but possesses insufficient radiopacity. Cilj ove studije bio je karakterizacija fiziĉkohemijskih osobina komercijalno dostupnog dentalnog cementa na bazi kalcijum silikata, Biodentina (Septodont). Metode. Ispitivanje materijala ukljuĉivalo je merenja radiografskog kontrasta, skening elektronsku mikroskopiju i radiografsku disperzivnu analizu, kvašenje, Furieovu transformocionu infracrvenu spektroskopiju, ĉvrstine, mikroi nano-poroznosti, vremena vezivanja, pH vrednosti i oslobaĊanja kalcijumovih jona. Ćelije su uzgajane na površini Biodentina sa ciljem da se ispita njegovo ponašanje u biološkim uslovima. Rezultati. Radiološki kontrast 4 cementa (2.8 mm Al) bio je niži od ISO standarda za materijale namenjene punjenju kanala korena. Cement se sastojao od finog praha sa ĉesticama male veliĉine i oblika koji se iz ovalnog menjao u kockasti nakon potapanja u simuliranu telesnu teĉnost. Glavne komponente cementa su kalcijum silikati i kalcijum karbonati. Biodentin je pokazao dobre mikromehaniĉke osobine i nisku poroznost koja se odnosi na mikro poroznost ĉija je proseĉna veliĉina pora 92 μm. Kvašenje (Ca=41°), oslobaĊanje jona kalcijuma (0,098 μg/cm²) i pH rastvora gde je ĉuvan (9.07) pokazali su zadovoljavajuće karakteristike. Ćelije su pokazale blizak kontakt sa cementnim ĉesticama što ukazuje na njihovu dobru biokompatibilnost. Zakljuĉak. Biodentin pokazuje dobre mehaniĉke i fiziĉkohemijske karakteristike, ali poseduje nezadovoljavajući radiografski kontrast.
