The application of CAD / CAM technology in Dentistry

Abstract: Information and communication technologies have found their application in the healthcare sector, including the frameworks of modern dentistry. CAD / CAM application in dentistry is the process by which is attained finished dental restoration through fine milling process of ready ceramic blocks. CAD / CAM is an acronym of english words Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) / Computer-Aided-Manufacture (CAM), respectively dental computer aided design and computer aided manufacture of inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges. “…This approach, known as computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, has become increasingly popular in the dentistry field over the past years [ 47 ]. In fact, many dental offices worldwide have been trying to implement modern IT solutions in their daily practice in order to reduce costs, work more efficiently, and increase patient satisfaction [ 48 ]. Modern CAD/CAM solutions seem to be the future of the dentistry field, namely for the customization of dental implants.…”

“…That is, when patients have bad teeth that need to be repaired or missing teeth need to be restored, they can communicate more conveniently and effectively with dentists through social media. Correspondingly, dentists can also utilize social media to communicate with patients and use CAD/CAM technology to make restorations (67), making the dentist's clinical work more convenient and efficient.…”

“…CAD/CAM was developed originally for its use in the automobile and aircraft industries [ 48 ], but the fast evolution of these systems led to their introduction in medicine due to their potential to produce medical devices, orthopedic implants, and artificial tissues and organs [ 49 ]. Among their medical applications, CAD/CAM has been greatly applied in dentistry, with many researchers using CAD/CAM for diagnosis and treatment planning and maxillofacial implants, dentures, crowns, and tooth tissue engineering [ 49 , 50 , 51 ]. A reliable and successful CAD/CAM system should be able to combine different materials to produce high-quality restorations [ 52 ].…”
