The Application of Interrater Reliability as a Solidification Instrument in a Phenomenological Study

Abstract: Interrater reliability has thus far not been a common application in phenomenological studies. However, once the suggestion w a s brought up by a team of supervising professors during the preliminary orals of a phenomenological study, the utilization of this verification tool turned out to be vital to the credibility level of this type of inquiry, where the researcher is perceived as the main instrument and where bias may, hence, be difficult to eliminate. With creativeness and the appropriate calculation appr… Show more

“…Then, we pursued axial coding (Strauss and Corbin, 1990) by grouping codes into categories and trying to match patterns among the cases (Yin, 2009). First, we chose two independent researchers to group 180 items into each category and used a "confusion matrix" as a valid option for calculating inter-rater reliability (Marques and McCall, 2005). The total valid coding is 171, and TA (the true agreement rate) is 171/180 ¼ 95.0 percent, indicating high reliability.…”

“…The inter-rater reliability rates for students' responses to the test item, interviews with teachers regarding time-axis fallay and their practices were %92, %89 and %91, respectively. These rates were over acceptable level of inter-rater level, which is being above %80 (Marques & McCall, 2005). The findings were presented after getting consensus between the coders.…”

“…For the purpose of validity and reliability, the researchers used the procedure of inter-rater reliability (reliability between examiners) as a strategy for strengthening the review. As stated in Marques and McCall (2005), in a qualitative study the findings are usually not represented in plain numbers. This type of study is regarded as less scientific and its findings are perceived in a more imponderable light.…”
