Utilization of artificial intelligence technology in an academic writing class: How do Indonesian students perceive?

Research shows that artificial intelligence (AI) technology positively influences students’ writing skills, but this area has yet to be touched by Indonesian researchers. This study aims to map perception, obstacles, and recommendations for optimizing use of AI in teaching academic writing in Indonesian. This article focuses on a case study of three senior high schools in Central Java, Indonesia. It employs quantitative and qualitative data. The researcher collected the data using questionnaires presented with Likert scale, followed by an in-depth interview through mobile instant messaging interview. Findings show that (1) AI-based learning tools help students to do academic research, especially in the planning step, to identify and develop the topics, as well as in the drafting step, to develop a paper draft, (2) AI-based learning tools are deemed flexible in accessibility despite not being able to cover all necessities required by students in writing process, (3) students are interested in using AI technology in academic writing class so that learning process will not be boring. Although AI has been used in academic writing classes, tools have not positively impacted quality of students’ academic papers in all indicators. There are several obstacles to using AI, namely (1) need for more available feature, especially in editing Indonesian text, and (2) in contrast, the features still need to be optimized. These are the recommendations for the optimization of AI-based learning tools, which are (1) adding features to edit Indonesian text, including spelling, diction, and sentence structure, and (2) enhancing AI literacy to be able to explore and leverage the existing features optimally. This research has yet to accommodate the possible coverage in checking the originality and accuracy of the written product assisted by AI-based learning tools, which could become a focus for future researchers.

Development and Validation of E-SelfIMo: E-Learning Self-Directed Interactive Module in Earth Science

This study developed and validated E-learning Self-directed Interactive Modules (E-SelfIMo) for Earth Science. The study employed Research and Development method, using the Borg and Gall development procedure, in creating eight e-modules using Kotobee software, evaluating them by experts and students, and determining their effectiveness in terms of students' conceptual understanding. Experts agreed that E-SelfIMo met the DepEd standards for non-printed learning materials, and students attested to their high validity in content, format, and usefulness. Pretest and posttest results for the effectiveness of E-SelfIMo revealed that students exposed to the E-SelfIMo have progressed from “Near Mastery” to “Near Full Mastery” in the chosen Earth Science topics, showing more significant improvement in their conceptual understanding than the control group. This study concludes that E-SelfIMo supports interactive, active, and self-directed learning thereby, improving students’ motivation, engagement, interest, and performance. The E-SelfIMo could be used with technology integration as a teaching and learning tool.

This research describes the use of NaturalReader in teaching listening TOEFL. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The analysis shows that NaturalReader is an AI-powered free text-to-speech service online which helps teachers/lecturers to teach English. In teaching English, especially listening to TOEFL, an English lecturer in ITB AAS Indonesia uses face-to-face learning combined with Zoom and Live YouTube streaming. The lecturer uses NaturalReader Text-to-Speech (TTS) in teaching listening TOEFL including Part A (short dialogue), Part B (long dialogue), and Part C (monologue). The lecturer opens the NaturalReader application, then clicks the + icon to input the words, phrases, or sentences that she/he wants to listen to the audio with their pronunciation. NaturalReader offers female and male voices and variation accents for both free and paid users. This software is capable of converting text into sound in multiple languages, including English with diverse accents, such as British or American. In teaching listening TOEFL, pronunciation especially accent cannot be separated from listening. In listening, the presence of several accents, the speakers’ speed, and the speaker’s intonation from native speakers on listening tests may threaten test fairness. By using the NaturalReader app, the students can learn to listen to how the word/phrase/sentence is pronounced differently with different accents and voices as they want. It means that the students study listening also pronunciation. When students understand correct pronunciation, students will understand English listening easier because they will learn to identify the sounds directly from native speakers.
