The Assessment of Orbital Apical Temperature Change With Local Cool Compress Application

Abstract: There was only a limited decrease in apical temperature by placing a local 0°C ice/water admixture over the eyelid. This information is useful in determining whether local hypothermia may be a potential alternative for traumatic optic neuropathy.

“…Vasoconstriction of the blood vessels may be responsible for the decrease in the tissue thickness, including choroids where the blood vessels are extremely dense. Lee et al noted that the temperature dropped to <37°C in the eye after 10 min of local cold compress application (11) . Furthermore, Shepherd et al showed that cooling between 28°C and 37°C causes the vessels to contract by increasing the adrenoreceptor sensitivity (7) .…”

“…After all these measurements were made, the participants had the cold packs administered to them (TheraPearl Eye-ssential Mask, Bausch & Lomb) for 10 min (Figure 1) (The pack dimensions were 9 x 2.75 inches, and the pack was filled with pliable gel pearls). Before application, the mask was left in a freezer set to 0°C (32 Fahrenheit) for 2 h; the temperature was selected based on the recommendations of a similar study published by Lee et al (11) . After the application, the previous measurements were repeated in the same order and under the same conditions.…”
