The association of caregivers’ and children’s characteristics with children’s social preference and being a class leader in China

Abstract: Children's social status in China includes both informal (e.g., social preference) and formal (e.g., class leader) statuses. This study examines the associations among caregivers' characteristics, children's characteristics, children's social preference, and being a class leader by using multiple sources of information (caregiver reports, self-ratings, sociometric methods, and achievement data).

“…As previously noted, leadership research has predominantly engaged adult samples, but there are excellent examples of theory-based approaches to understanding early leadership (e.g., Day et al, 2014; Eva et al, 2021; Z. “…In China, the establishment of the student leader system aims to cultivate students' collective and obedience consciousness, and class leaders are responsible for helping the teacher maintain class order and reporting any misconduct or rule-breaking to the teacher, especially in the absence of the teacher (Zhu, 2021). Class leaders have power over ordinary students in the class and have higher status than other students (Liu et al, 2019). Due to the power imbalance and hierarchical relationship between student leaders and other students, the abuse of power frequently occurs, resulting in the tension between class leaders and other students.…”
