The Bekenstein formula and string theory (N-brane theory)

Abstract: A review of recent progress in string theory concerning the Bekenstein formula for black hole entropy is given. Topics discussed include p-branes, D-branes and supersymmetry; the correspondence principle; the D-and M-brane approach to black hole entropy; the D-brane analogue of Hawking radiation, and information loss; D-branes as probes of black holes; and the Matrix theory approach to charged and neutral black holes. Some introductory material is included. To be published as a Topical Review in Classical and Q… Show more

“…Several topics are closely related to the subject of this review, but are not included: (1) Various calculations and explanations of the BH entropy [169,355] became a large and rather independent field of research which shows, however, overlaps [165,171] with the general treatment of the dilaton theories presented in this review. We do not cover approaches which imply further physical assumptions which transgress the orthodox application of quantum theory to gravity [34,35,43,24,31].…”

“…Rather than presenting the solution and showing that it solves the low energy equations of type II superstring, we will describe some aspects of the art of solution-building. There are many excellent reviews of this area (see, for example, [45,46,47,48,49,50,51,52,53], other general reviews on black holes in string/M theories include [54,55,56]), so we shall be brief. The method of construction of various classical solutions, we will see, will throw light on the microscopic configurations corresponding to these solutions.…”

“…String theory has been very successful in exactly reproducing the entropy of a variety of supersymmetric black holes by counting appropriate microstates (see, e.g., reviews [1,2] and references therein). We will show below that similar techniques can be applied to extremal Kerr to reproduce (1.1).…”
