The Beneficial Effects of Quercetin, Curcumin, and Resveratrol in Obesity

Abstract: Over the past two decades, obesity has been one of the major public health concerns in most countries. In the search for new molecules that could be used for the treatment of obesity, good perspectives have been opened up for polyphenols, a class of natural bioactive phytochemicals. Experimental and limited clinical trial evidence supports that some polyphenols such as quercetin, curcumin, and resveratrol have potential benefit functions on obesity treatment. This brief review focuses on the main functions of … Show more

“…[72]. Among the phytochemicals studied, a special attention has been paid on phenolic compounds from a variety of sources [73,74], such as tea [75,76], grapes [77], ginseng [78], red to purple colour fruits [79][80][81], cruciferous vegetables [82,83], etc. Several bioactive compounds found in oils, such as tocopherols and tocotrienols, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and sterols have anti-obesity effects [84].…”

“…In recent years, quercetin has become a rising concern in nutritional and therapeutic potential, owning to its multiple pharmacological effects (Russo, Spagnuolo, Tedesco, Bilotto, & Russo, ). In addition to antitumor, antiobesity, antihypertensive, and significant heart‐related benefits, a large number of in vivo studies have shown that quercetin had a strong potential for antidiabetes and its complications (Bule, Abdurahman, Nikfar, Abdollahi, & Amini, ; Hu et al, ; Lu et al, ; Marunaka et al, ; Patel et al, ; Shi et al, ; Y. Zhao et al, ; X. Zhu, Cheng, et al, ; Y. Zhu, Teng, et al, ). It has been found that quercetin prevents diabetes mellitus by decreasing blood glucose via enhancing insulin sensitivity and stimulating insulin secretion from β cells (Gaballah, Zakaria, Mwafy, Tahoon, & Ebeid, ; Jeong, Kang, Choi, Kim, & Kim, ).…”

“…It is also reported that Piperine increases the bioavailability of curcumin (28). However, using turmeric or curcumin extract or more novel delivery approaches such as nanoparticles may be more effective and provide certain health benefits (29). WHO recommends 0 -3 mg/kg body weight as an acceptable daily intake of curcumin as an additive.…”

“…Safe dose of turmeric powder was used in the current study and no discomfort and side effects were reported (9). Accordingly, curcumin had beneficial effects on the improvement of plasma SIRT1, lipid profile, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity or lifespan in "metabolically disordered" models (29)(30)(31). Since these observations indicate, a certain degree of metabolic dysfunction is required to obtain favorable effects of curcumin.…”
