Purpose This study aims to investigate the perceived benefits arising from tourist activities at natural disaster sites, to analyze the influence of perceived benefits on satisfaction and behavioral intentions and to identify origin region’s moderating role. Design/methodology/approach A research model containing dark tourism motivations (DTMs), tourist perceived benefits (TPBs), tourist satisfaction (TS), protection intention (PI) and loyalty intention (LIs) was developed, and visitor origin was introduced as a moderating variable. Taking the 5·12 Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial Museum as a case site, data were obtained by distributing questionnaires on-site, and the model was tested using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings DTMs had a significant effect on cognitive and affective benefits, and TPBs significantly affected TS, PI and LIs, with satisfaction playing a partial mediating role. The origins of tourists showed a moderating role in part of the influence relationship of perceived benefits. Practical implications This study explored the perceived benefits among dark tourists and built a research model of their influence on tourist satisfaction and behavior. This study not only provides suggestions for managers related to dark tourism development in natural disaster areas, but also offers the possibility of enhancing tourist dark tourism experiences by interpreting the psychology and behavior of dark tourists. Originality/value This research adopted a new perspective of the decision-making behavior of dark tourists. The perceived benefits arising from visiting natural disaster sites were analyzed and the relationships between TBSs and motivation, TS, PI and LIs were examined. Considering the specificity of dark tourism emotions, the research also analyzed the similarities and differences in the psychology and behavior of locals and non-locals in dark tourism. The research results enrich and deepen the theoretical study of dark tourism.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the opportunities and challenges of the potential dark tourism of Lapindo Mud, as well as to find out the practice of Lapindo Mud dark tourism because of the many irregularities that the authors found when conducting research. The methodology used is a qualitative method with a case study approach. In-depth interviews with Lapindo mud victims, the Lapindo Mud Control Center observation, and documentation. The Opportunity of Lapindo Mud dark tourism is the tourist motivation for visiting Lapindo Mud is not to admire the natural beauty and take a vacation, but there is a spiritual and sympathetic sense of tourists interspersed with pain and even anger towards tragic stories caused by nature or human crimes to be unique. Some facts make challenges for this dark tourism; namely, management is carried out spontaneously or without planning. The focus of this study is indeed narrow, but the findings provide theoretical and practical insights into the conceptualization of dark tourism by analyzing opportunities and challenges related to the potential of dark tourism in Lapindo Mud. Thus, the understanding of this phenomenon can be improved and can be used to add knowledge and reference material for further research. Awesalo Waterfall is one of the tourist destinations for the community, especially for the Konawe community, which is located in the KPHL Laiwoi area. The manager makes Awesalo Waterfall one of the objects that will be developed as a mainstay tourist destination. Nature tourism is a form of business development that is able to provide economic benefits for the community and area managers. The development of the Awesalo waterfall as a natural tourism object needs to pay attention to feasibility that does not conflict with conservation principles. This research is intended to examine whether or not Awesalo Waterfall can be developed as a natural tourism object. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and related literature studies. The modified Guideline for Analysis of Operational Areas for Natural Tourism Objects and Attractions (ADOODTW) is used as a reference for analyzing the feasibility of Awesalo Waterfall. Based on the results of the study, the total feasibility value of Awesalo Waterfall can be developed as a natural tourism object reached 81.87%. These scores include attractiveness (87.5%), accessibility (75%), accommodation (75%) and amenities (90%).
