“…One concern is that the adolescent may deprive herself of her parents' support during a critical period due to a mistaken expectation of her parents' reaction. Even though judicial determinations may be arbitrary, some authors have posited that the very existence of these statutes may encourage minors to seek parental consultation in their decision (Worthington et al, 1989). This goal of getting reluctant minors to consult with their parents may be achieved if, in fact, minors are opting to confer with their parents because the prospect of going before a judge is too forbidding.…”

“…Many claims have been made about the impact of parental involvement laws. Positive claims are that they (a) promote informed decision making (Salholz et al, 1989), (b) provide additional sources of support for minors, (Worthington et al, 1991), (c) facilitate family unity and/or the resolution of family conflict (Worthington et al 1989), (d) promote thoughtful and responsible sexual behavior among minors (Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, 1989), and (e) decrease pregnancy rates (Rogers, Boruch, Stores, & DeMoya, 1991). Negative claims are that these laws (a) increase birth rates among minors by deterring them from abortion (American Civil Liberties Union Foundation Reproductive Freedom Project, 1986, p. 7), (b) impede access to competent medical care (Stone, 1990), and (c) cause delays in pregnancy outcome decisions (Stone, 1990).…”
