The bioactivities of sclareol: A mini review

Abstract: Sclareol, a diterpene alcohol isolated from the herbal and flavor plant clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.), is far-famed as the predominant ingredient in the refined oil of Salvia sclarea (L.). The empirical medicine of Salvia sclarea L. focused on various diseases, such as arthritis, oral inflammation, digestive system diseases, whereas the sclareol possessed more extensive and characteristic bioactivities, including anti-tumor, anti-inflammation and anti-pathogenic microbes, even anti-diabetes and hypertension. … Show more

“…[22][23][24] Previous work has shown that SC exerts significant antitumor effects against breast cancer, osteosarcoma, colon cancer, and leukemia, among others, through its ability to disrupt the cell cycle and promote apoptosis. [16] SC in combination with bortezomib was reported to inhibit cellular growth of cervical cancer by upregulating tumor suppressor Caveolin-1. [25] In this study, we evaluated the antitumor effects of SC against lung adenocarcinoma.…”

“…[ 15 ] Among them, sclareol (SC), isolated from the Salvia sclarea plant, is known to have promising anticancer activity against cancer cell lines from the breast, colon, osteosarcoma, leukemia, and small cell lung cancer. [ 16 ] However, no studies have been conducted yet to evaluate their anticancer effects in non‐small cell lung adenocarcinoma either in vitro or in vivo. In this study, we evaluated the SC anticancer activity against lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549) and showed that this natural compound inhibits cell growth and mobility and promotes cell death by apoptosis and ferroptosis.…”

“…Sclareol is responsible for the antitumor activity of Clary Sage extracts; indeed, it slows down tumor cell line proliferation, inducing apoptosis and DNA damage. It has proven to be effective against multiple cancer types, such as leukemia, breast, colon, lung, cervical cancer, and osteosarcoma [15]. Moreover, its administration induces relaxation and limits hyperglycemia [16,17].…”
