The Biocatalysis in Cancer Therapy

Abstract: Biocatalysis can be defined as the use of isolated enzymes or enzymes inside cells to convert substrates into products. The term “biocatalysis” is often used in modern organic synthesis in connection with the environmentally friendly manufacture of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, where biocatalysis has achieved great success in recent years. Here, we review the potential use of biocatalysis in cancer therapy. We summarize the common biocatalytic reactions for activation of anticancer prodrugs, generation of exc… Show more

“…Biocatalysis has made an impact in the synthesis of chemicals and pharmaceuticals over the last years. Beyond catalysis in the world of low-molecular-weight compounds, there is also the opportunity to use enzymes as therapeutics with various modes of action. Many therapeutic enzymes have been already approved by the FDA and brought to market .…”

“…The biological importance of enzymes has generated considerable interest in their study, with a significant focus on the elucidation of their structure and catalytic properties. Detailed knowledge of biologically significant enzymes has perhaps proven most influential in the pharmaceutical and medical fields, where advances in their chemistry has facilitated a better understanding of the mechanism of diseases and the development of more effective treatments [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…[2] This strategy has facilitated a broad spectrum of enzymatic modifications, including enhancements in catalytic activity, substrate specificity, and thermal stability, as well as the creation of completely novel enzymatic functions. [3] Consequently, biocatalysts are being increasingly harnessed as useful tools for the green synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, [4] for modifying biological therapeutics, [5] and even for degrading plastic waste, [6] thereby contributing to more sustainable industrial processes. [7] Oxazolidinones, one of the valuable heterocyclic compounds that contain both oxygen and nitrogen atoms in a five-membered ring, have attracted remarkable attention in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry.…”
