Relative antioxidant activities of the seven tocopherols

The antioxidant activities of the seven tocopherols and of the unmethylated parent compound (tocol) have been compared in several systems.The three tocopherols unsubstituted in the 5-position (6, y and 7) were more effective than the other four in protecting carotene in miner21 oil solution at 75".In lard esters a t goo and in methyl linoleate a t .50° 6, y , ?I and were the most, and E, 5 and a the least, effective, the precise order depending on the conditions and concentrations used. The tocopherols were much less effective in protecting lard esters exposed to light, 6 being the best of the series. Recent (unpublished) work,a however,Similarly it is now thought that the To avoid confusion the subscript and the synthetic compound used in our experiments had this structure. now indicates that natural (-tocopherol is not 5 : 7-dimethyltocol. natural c-compound has not the 5-monomethyl structure previously accepted. S has been added to the Greek symbols in this paper to denote a synthetic compound.
