The bionomics and diversity of freshwater snails species in Yewa North, Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract: Snail control as a form of integrated control for schistosomiasis has been strongly advocated but data on biocontrol using competitor snails are relatively lacking in most endemic areas. Monthly sampling of freshwater snails was conducted in four water bodies in Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. Monthly in situ measurements of the physico-chemical characteristics of surface waters were carried out using field meters. A total number of 13 snail species were recovered from the water bodies. … Show more

“…It forms part of the epidemiological studies on urogenital schistosomiasis conducted among pregnant women between February 1, 2010 and February 15, 2011 [ 9 ]. As previously described in several studies carried out in the study area, transmission of schistosomiasis is aided by lack of potable water supply and presence of snails intermediate hosts of schistosomes [ 9 , 15 , 29 31 ].…”

“…The last decade estimated population of infected pregnant women totalled 10 million [ 10 ]. With increasing reports on Schistosoma infection during pregnancy [ 9 , 11 15 ], management of infected pregnant women through treatment with praziquantel in late trimesters has been advocated in order to avert undesirable pregnancy outcomes [ 16 ]. Despite recommendations from WHO, many endemic countries are reluctant to include it because of the side effects [ 10 ].…”
