The Bioremediation Potential of Hydrocarbonoclastic Bacteria Isolated From a Mangrove Contaminated by Petroleum Hydrocarbons on the Cilacap Coast, Indonesia

Abstract: International audienceThe main purpose of the study was to isolate strains of bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons from contaminated mangroves and to investigate the ability of the isolated bacteria to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in a microcosm model of an oily sludge. The potential use of these bacteria strains as environmental clean-up agents was tested by culturing them with six different polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds (phenothiazine, fluorene, fluoranthene, dibenzothiophene, … Show more

“…Heavy traffic activity from both mainland and ocean around the area of port and urban to be the source of Pb pollutant, particularly from fume exhaust, as tetra ethyl lead (TEL) has been used as octane number enhancer of fuel so that the fume disposal of combustion engine increased the amount of Pb to the environment. This was supported by Syakti et al (2012) that the concentration of dissolved Pb of the aquatic environment associated with human activities was mainly derived from TEL that is used as octane number enhancer of fuel.…”

“…Microorganisme have two important role in biological system of sponge, that is first as source of food and both life have symbiosis to either through inter and also intra cellular, [3,6,22] . Some found by sponge type is symbiosis with bacterium, like: Spons Theonella sp,, Surassinoru Melophlus, Callyspongia sp, Ircinia sp, Stylissa Blabeli, Lisoclinum sp, Clathria sp, Jaspis sp, P. nigra, X.Testudinaria and stellifera, [13,15,20] . Some microorganisme sea (bacterium) known can aromatik hydrocarbon compound degradator with high toksisity for example: Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Alcaligenes, Brevibacterium, Brevibacillus, and Bacillus, [2,7,21] .…”

“…It is estimated that up to 40 % biomass several species of sponges prepared by the bacterial community, (Murniasih et al, 2010;Thakur, 2004). Some unidentified indigenous bacteria could degrade petroleum sludge, (Marzuki et al, 2015;Syakti et al, 2013;Li et al, 2012).…”
