The biotechnological potential of Nannochloropsis

Abstract: Oleaginous microalgae have commercial potential as photoautotrophic cell factories capable of producing advanced biofuels and high-value speciality oils. One genus of particular interest is Nannochloropsis, which includes a number of robust marine species well suited to industrial-scale cultivation. Advances in bioprocess technology, together with strain enhancement through traditional mutagenesis or genetic engineering approaches, now offer the possibility of improving the economics of oil production from Nan… Show more

“…Microalgal constituents are versatile and have potential applications in energy, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries [25]. Nannochloropsis components such as whole biomass, pigments, long-chain PUFA, triglycerides, alkanes and alkenes have many biotechnological applications including production of biofuels [26], aquaculture, fish food, livestock feeds and wastewater treatment [27]. Because of these applications, Nannochloropsis grown for other uses could be diverted for the development of functional food products at minimal additional cost.…”

“…have many industrial applications. The potential for manipulation of its biosynthetic machinery by genetic engineering and for the direction of the metabolism by an intricate choice of the cultivation conditions makes it very attractive for sustainable production [ 11 ]. The cosmetic applications of Nannochloropsis are under investigation [ 3 , 12 ].…”
