The BlueTides Mock Image Catalogue: Simulated observations of high-redshift galaxies and predictions for JWST imaging surveys

Madeline A. Marshall,
Katelyn Watts,
Stephen Wilkins
et al.

Abstract: We present a mock image catalogue of ∼100,000 𝑀 π‘ˆ 𝑉 βˆ’22.5 to βˆ’19.6 mag galaxies at 𝑧 = 7-12 from the B T cosmological simulation. We create mock images of each galaxy with the James Webb (JWST), Hubble, Roman, and Euclid Space Telescopes, as well as Subaru, and VISTA, with a range of near-and mid-infrared filters. We perform photometry on the mock images to estimate the success of these instruments for detecting high-𝑧 galaxies. We predict that JWST will have unprecedented power in detecting high-𝑧 galax… Show more

“…To conduct this, we insert galaxies with a SΓ©rsic index of 1 and M π‘ˆ 𝑉 luminosities ranging from -19 to -24 into the F200W image used for our selection. Half light radii of the fake sources are of different sizes, which are designed to match the theoretical predicted sizes of distant galaxies from BlueTides (Feng et al 2016;Wilkins et al 2017;Marshall et al 2022). The simulation was carried out by sweeping the magnitude range in 0.2 mag intervals, placing 1000 galaxies in the SMACS 0723 parallel field for each interval, and then running SExtractor in the same way on this field as we did for our original detection.…”

“…Beyond integrated photometry/spectroscopy it is now also possible to produce synthetic imaging (e.g. Trayford et al 2015;Snyder et al 2015;Ma et al 2018;Roper et al 2022;Marshall et al 2022), enabling self-consistent comparisons of morphological metrics. Forward modelling has been applied to models covering a wide range of scales, from high-resolution simulations of individual halos (e.g.…”
