The case for Dynamic Assessment in speech and language therapy

Abstract: This paper highlights the appeal of dynamic assessment (DA) for speech and language therapists (SLTs), and describes the usefulness of various DA models and methods. It describes the background to DA, and the uses to which DA has been put, by educational psychologists in the UK, and by SLTs in the USA. The research and development of methods of DA are described, and the case for developing DA methods for use in a) research and predictive applications, and b) clinical applications to inform interventions by SLT… Show more

“…However, there is variability to the extent that some approaches are adaptive, that is, hints/scaffolds are provided which are differentially contingent upon the individual's responses (e.g., [115][116][117][118]). Testers who seek to use these approaches will typically focus upon changes in problem-solving processes and the use of strategy patterns during testing.…”

“…In the past several decades, communication assessment has evolved from a static prescriptive process designed to critique learner competence, to a more dynamic practice leading to fluid estimations of the learner's current and potential abilities within and across relationships and settings (Hasson and Joffe 2007). Dynamic assessment has employed a test-teach-re-test format to determine aspects of instructional support critical to improved performance (Kublin et al 1998).…”

“…The goal of dynamic assessment is to identify the speech and language skills the child currently possesses as well as potential for learning (Peñ a, Gillam, & Bedore, 2014). Through the highly interactive test-teach-retest method of dynamic assessment, cultural bias can be minimised due to a focus on learning instead of static knowledge, which is often replete of cultural and linguistic bias (Hasson & Joffe, 2007). In addition, dynamic assessment can yield important information about appropriate intervention strategies and targets (Hasson, Camilleri, Jones, Smith, & Dodd, 2013).…”
