El artículo pretende identificar el impacto de la exposición temprana a una segunda lengua sobre algunas de las funciones ejecutivas, en relación con el tiempo de exposición y sexo de los participantes. El diseño metodológico es de tipo descriptivo, con alcance correlacional cuasi experimental, tipo caso control. La muestra es no probabilística, conformada por 30 niños en edades entre 5 y 6 años, en contexto escolarizado urbano. Para establecer el perfil cognitivo de los participantes se tomaron en cuenta como instrumentos la evaluación neuropsicológica infantil (ENI) y la escala WISC III abreviada (cubos y vocabulario). Se evidenció desempeño de los niños bilingües en memoria auditiva verbal; en atención visual y memoria de trabajo, los resultados son relativamente altos. En flexibilidad cognitiva, no se evidencian diferencias significativas para ambos grupos (bilingües y no bilingües). Encontramos diferencias entre niños y niñas: en memoria verbal auditiva y atención visual, las niñas muestran mejores desempeños, mientras que los niños obtuvieron mejores desempeños en las pruebas de memoria de trabajo. Por último, no encontramos correlación estadísticamente significativa entre coeficiente intelectual y resultados de la ENI.

This article reviews the background of the foreign language bilingualism in Colombia, as well as the Colombian bilingualism plans and the policy launched between 2004 and 2016. Then, these plans and policy are analyzed taking into account the most common criticisms from the academic community. In this sense, aspects such as the lack of continuity, emphasis on employability, misconceptions of bilingualism, privileged position of English, adoption of the Common European Framework of Reference, English instruction as a way of business, and omission of teachers' voices are analyzed.Key words: Bilingualism plans, educational policies, English as a foreign language.Este artículo revisa los antecedentes del bilingüismo en lengua extranjera en Colombia, así como los planes y políticas colombianas de bilingüismo lanzadas entre 2004 y 2016. Después, dichos planes se analizan considerando las críticas más comunes de la comunidad académica. Así, aspectos como la falta de continuidad, el énfasis dado a la empleabilidad, algunas ideas erróneas relacionadas con el bilingüismo, la posición privilegiada que se le ha dado al inglés, la adopción del Marco Común de Referencia Europeo, la instrucción en inglés como una forma de negocio y la omisión de las voces de los profesores son analizados.Palabras clave: inglés como lengua extranjera, planes de bilingüismo, políticas educativas.

Teacher´s beliefs and conceptions of teaching English are an important area for the professional development path of primary teachers. Giving primary teachers opportunities to grow professionally and support their learning belongs to the wide variety of practices that can be implemented to foster early education today. To do that, the Colombian government has implemented different initiatives; however, through the exploration of literature, primary public-school teachers need more professional development opportunities to fulfill the objectives stated by the Ministry of National Education. This is why, the present study aims to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of elementary rural teachers involved in the incorporation of English in their teaching practices. A total of ten teachers were selected to be involved during a semester that lasts the implementation of the project. Through qualitative research under the exploratory paradigm, we identified frustration, motivation, and lack of expertise as the main perceptions that interfere the teaching practices of the selected population. Findings suggest that professional development strategies should be incorporated as an eventual strategy to foster the teaching practices in the classroom.
