The challenges of co-research in labs in real-world contexts: empirical findings from four labs in the context of urban climate-change research

Abstract: This article gives insight into two research projects dealing with urban climate change that used laboratories in real-world contexts as a research mode. The article’s objective is to investigate the challenges we experienced based on a reflective comparison of the projects’ labs. Challenges occurred regarding the lab’s core elements, i.e. real-world experiments, the cooperation of scientists and practitioners (transdisciplinarity), the intervention methods (transformation-oriented research), and long-term cha… Show more

“…Thus, a learning for city administration, the investigation scope should be as small as possible to formulate clear and cohesive measures that can induce short-term impulses for local residents. This downscaling to a small section of realistic complexity complements the conclusions of other cooperative research projects in the context of urban climate adaptation (Sieber et al 2022). Nevertheless, city-wide or region-wide strategic documents about GI planning should be carried out and cross-referenced in parallel to be in line with long-term mission statements.…”

“…In addition, the effective transference of information and communication between local actors and researchers during the different phases of the project appeared as a major weakness of our experience. Communication is a difficult and main challenge of TdR [46], [48], [49]. In our case, the use of nature-related concepts such as GI or NbS based on academic terminologies combined with the unfamiliarity for local terms referring to environmental practices could have hindered the proper involvement of non-scientific actors.…”

“…Reflecting on the relations of power, the degree of commitment has been related to the self-interest of participants for a project [49]. In our case, the foundations of a researchdriven output-oriented experience resulted in a strong but subjective sense of ownership for the prototype as a priority to fulfill the research goal.…”
