The Challenges of Implementing Surface‐enhanced Raman Scattering in Studies of Biological Systems

Abstract: The power of surface‐enhanced Raman scattering ( SERS ) in bioanalytics arises from the plasmonic amplification of vibration signals and the use of nanostructures allowing for miniaturization of the sensing platform. SERS spectroscopy also inherits intrinsic advantages of Raman scattering: vibrational fingerprint distinctive for every molecule, utilization of lasers, and confocal microscopes, which confines the detection spot, and feasibility of performing the me… Show more

“…SERS nanotags can be further functionalized by recognition elements (for example antibodies, aptamers, DNA, and lectins) to promote a selective interaction between the SERS nanotags and the target molecules. 5–10 In plasmonic SERS systems, the Raman signature of adsorbed molecules on the surface of plasmonic nanomaterials can be enhanced several fold via an electromagnetic enhancement mechanism. 11 This mechanism is the result of the interaction of light with wavelengths greater than the size of the nanoparticle and free electrons in the nanoparticle, which leads to an electric field enhancement around the nanoparticle owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon.…”
