The Ciji-Hua’ai-Baosheng II Formula Attenuates Chemotherapy-Induced Anorexia in Mice With H22 Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: Background: Ciji-Hua’ai-Baosheng II Formula (CHB-II-F) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula, which specifically targets different aspects of chemotherapy-induced adverse effects in patients with cancer. In our clinical application, CHB-II-F significantly alleviated chemotherapy-induced anorexia (loss of appetite) and improved the quality of life for patients with tumor during and after chemotherapy. However, the mechanism of CHB-II-F in alleviation of chemotherapy-induced anorexia remains to be further in… Show more

“…In clinical practice, side effects of 5-FU include anorexia due to nausea and vomiting (Shih et al 2007). Anticancer drugs are known to stimulate the secretion of 5-HT and substance P proteins in the gastrointestinal tract which bind to 5-HT3 and NK1 receptors to generate nerve impulses; these signals are transmitted to the vomiting centre to cause a vomiting reaction (Xi et al 2021). The weight loss of mice by 5-FU administration observed in this experiment was considered to be due to the decrease in food intake caused by anorexia.…”

“…Furadiene resisted angiogenesis and induced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) [ 83 , 84 ]. Ciji-Hua’ai-Baosheng II Formula could improve the anorexia and gastrointestinal injury caused by chemotherapy in tumor-bearing mice by affecting the appetite regulatory factors in the hypothalamic central nervous system and feeding area, and enhance the antitumor effect of 5-FU [ 85 ]. Curcumin is an anticancer component of turmeric.…”

“…NPY decreased PD-1+ T cells and PD-1 expression/cell in T cells of both healthy individuals and patients with hepatocellular carcinoma; the peptide augmented T cell proliferation and the eradication of hepatocellular carcinoma cells [ 162 ]. In an experimental animal model of hepatocellular carcinoma, the Ciji-Hua’ai-Baosheng II formula (a traditional Chinese medicine strategy targeting the adverse effects mediated by chemotherapy in cancer patients) increased serum NPY level and NPY expression in the hypothalamus [ 163 ].…”
