The Clinical Characteristics of Obese Patients with Acanthosis Nigricans and Its Independent Risk Factors

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and risk factors for acanthosis nigricans (AN) in obese patients. 80 obese patients without AN (OB group) and 128 obese patients with AN (AN group) were included in this study. Clinical data for each patients were collected. Serum levels of leptin were measured by ELISA. Body mass index (BMI), uric acid (UA) levels, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR were higher in AN than OB (P<0.05). The levels of leptin were significantly higher in AN than OB (P<0.001) … Show more

“…En un estudio sobre factores de riesgo para presentar AN, se evidenció que pacientes obesos con AN presentaban mayor insulinemia y uricemia en comparación con obesos sin AN. Además, los hombres obesos con AN presentaron una menor cantidad de testosterona en comparación con hombres obesos sin AN (35) .…”

“…Among cutaneous hyperpigmentations due to increased melanin, acanthosis nigricans characterized by velvety brownish-black thickened hyperpigmentation [13,14] is a representative disorder associated with metabolic syndrome. Growing evidence indicates that hyperuricemia is an important risk factor for acanthosis nigricans [15,16]. We assumed that uric acid generated by GDA could contribute to hyperpigmentation in seborrheic keratosis.…”

“…It has been divided into obesity‐associated, benign, syndromic, malignant, unilateral, acral, drug‐induced and mixed types based on different etiologic factors . Obesity‐associated AN is the most common dermatological manifestation of obesity and associated with multiple metabolic disorders, such as hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance (IR), hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation and even depressive symptoms, leading to a great therapeutic challenge in the management of AN patients. To date, AN has been treated with various therapeutics with limited and unsatisfactory effect.…”
