The Comparison of Regional RNFL and Fundus Vasculature by OCTA in Chinese Myopia Population

Abstract: Purpose To determine the correlations between peripapillary vessel density, retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness, and myopic indices at retina quadrants with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in Chinese. Methods Fifty-six subjects with a mean spherical equivalent (MSE) of −3.63 ± 0.29 D were included. Peripapillary RNFL thickness and retinal vessel density in four sectors (superior, nasal, inferior, and temporal quadrants) were determined by OCTA, and correlations of the main outcomes were … Show more

“…Greater AL was the other ocular factor associated with lower peripapillary VD in our population, and this finding may provide insight into glaucoma pathogenesis. To date, the negative correlation between AL and peripapillary VD has only been demonstrated in small studies of young myopic patients in China 15,23,39. These findings are consistent with previous reports, which used fluorescein angiography to detect reduced retinal perfusion in myopic eyes 40.…”

“…Strong, positive associations between RNFL thickness and peripapillary VD have been previously reported,23,24 and support the idea that, in general, the quantity of perfused RPCs is proportional to the quantity of RNFL it is supplying 2527. Prior histology and OCTA studies have demonstrated how RPCs run parallel to the RNFL and that their densities within a given eye are highly correlated 26,28.…”

“…The peripapillary RNFL was determined using the optic nerve head protocol. Measurements were automatically performed at four peripapillary quadrants: superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal according to the previous study [19]. We had a single observer to perform the OCTA examination who was blind to the study.…”

“…At first reported in 2012, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a safer technique to quantitatively assess retinal vasculature than conventional angiography methods 5 7 . A number of studies substantiated a significant decrease in peripapillary and macular vessel density (VD) in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) eyes compared to normal controls 8 10 .…”
