The Complexity of Verbal Semantics—An Intricate Relationship Between Qatal and Wayyiqtol

Abstract: This article analyzes the relationship that exists between the qatal and wayyiqtol forms in Biblical Hebrew. It provides a twofold approach, based on complexity theory, fuzziology, cognitive linguistics and the theory of dynamic semantic maps, on the one hand, as well as on an original empirical study involving all the instances of the two grams in the book of Genesis, on the other. As a result, the article advances a model of an intricate, multi-level and dynamic interaction of qatal and wayyiqtol in terms of… Show more

“…The horizontal axis not only serves as an explanatory vehicle for the cohesion of senses offered by a given gram, but may also be imagined as representing a grammaticalisation channel, which is recursively activated in a language and has been travelled by several grams of this language. This channel has been referred to as 'a stream' (Andrason 2015a(Andrason , 2016a(Andrason , 2016band Andrason and Visser 2015).…”

“…Christian Locatell battles with another issue hotly debated in Biblical Hebrew scholarship: the nature of grammatical semantics in light of its inherent polysemy and the perspective from grammaticalization theory (Andrason 2011(Andrason , 2016. Locatell examines how the polysemy of grammatical meaning and its grammaticalization have been approached by cognitive linguistics and by more formal theories, in particular, generative grammar, in studies devoted to Biblical Hebrew.…”

“…This can be illustrated by the categorial split between Preterite-Present verbs and the Preterite in Germanic(Andrason & Locatell 2016), and the split polysemy of the qatal form in Biblical Hebrew. In both cases, the resultative proper value is (virtually) lost (the diachronic center of the map) such that certain more advanced senses are not connected to the other senses(Andrason 2016). Of course, the connectivity principle is obligatory from a conceptual and diachronic (i.e.…”
