The Computer is a Medium, Not a Tool: Collaborative Media Challenging Interaction Design

Abstract: Abstract:Collaborative media entail an emerging set of digitally mediated practices, characterized by collaborative communicative action within organically developing, cross-medial infrastructures. We argue that computers are increasingly turning from tools into (collaborative) media in everyday use, and that this shift poses a significant challenge to the discipline of interaction design. Particularly prominent aspects of the challenge include the way design processes are conceptualized and structured, and th… Show more

“…These traits offer perspective on the format and affordances of podcasts as collaborative media. Löwgren and Reimer (2013a) Piper (2015: 45) refers to Meserko (2010) and highlights that, 'The comedian podcasts gives comedians, as both podcast hosts and interview subjects, a forum that allows direct and intimate communication with audiences in ways of unmediated by content regulations, advertiser requirements, or the politics of the comedy club bookings'. This refers to the affordances of the podcast, which enable direct and intimate conversations.…”

“…Traditionally, different aspects of variation in service interaction flows have been analysed in studies, which have aimed to challenge existing ways of thinking, analysing, and designing interactive technological systems [24,27,40,43]. Regarding service-oriented thinking, [47] argue that standardization of the output of a service is much more difficult compared to standardization of goods.…”

“…Interaction and collaboration studies have shown that when compared to direct interaction between people in situ, use of technology in the interaction can make some issues even more visible [20,27,36]. One such instance is situatedness of action, seen as manifesting variation and thus necessitating understanding of different viewpoints of actors, in a situation where people interact without having a good model of each other's action, skills, resources, or location or other influential factors of that particular situation [40,43].…”

“…In recent years, design scholars have presented design approaches which go beyond issues of usability and task accomplishment, to instead focus on enjoyment [3], emotions [29], experience [27], ambiguity [14] and other aesthetic or hedonistic concerns, sometimes referred to as "third wave HCI" [4,15] or recently "humanistic HCI" [1]. However, as pointed out by Löwgren and Reimer [24], approaches founded in interaction design and HCI seem to come up short when approaching the highly participatory mass media applications that dominate the contemporary web -such as social media, discussion platforms and systems for online comments. Löwgren and Reimer call these systems "collaborative media" [23], and suggest that the design of such media should be approached from a perspective that combines interaction design with media and communication studies: "This implies that the academic discipline of media and communication studies becomes a core part of producing knowledge on collaborative media.…”
