The Concept and Effects of Service Modularity -- A Literature Review

Abstract: The principle of modularity is well established in product development and software engineering. In recent years, this principle has been extended to services in different industries, such as financial services, hospital, logistics, IT, or health care. Service providers apply the principle of modularity to achieve reductions in time and cost of delivering customized services. Service modularity is thus a key concept for a service-oriented perspective of the enterprise but research is still in an early stage. T… Show more

“…Moreover, Dörbecker and Böhmann (2013) indicate that scholars have overlooked the risks and negative effects of modular service designs. They argue that possible trade-offs in design choices need to be explored in order to identify boundary conditions for the application of service modularity.…”

“…In recent years, a transfer of existing approaches from products to services can be observed [12]. Generally, service modularity is a similar principle with similar expected potentials such as reuse, faster development, module-wide innovation, efficient (re-) configuration and others [29].…”

“…Generally, service modularity is a similar principle with similar expected potentials such as reuse, faster development, module-wide innovation, efficient (re-) configuration and others [29]. Altogether, a discussion on the benefits and risks of service modularity has emerged, but there is a need for further empirical examination of the related antecedents and effects [12] [13].…”

“…In the two-dimension, most of literatures agreed that modularity would be the key [15]. Even the KIBS literatures, which traditionally emphasize the customized nature of KIBS, has recently made the point that KIBS might adopt modular approaches [16], especially apply service modularization approaches [17].…”
