The concept of miasm—evolution and present day perspective

Abstract: This paper reviews the circumstances in which the concept of miasm evolved and how subsequent developments in medicine have improved our understanding of the cause of diseases. It concludes with an emphasis on the need to further refine the homeopathic concept of disease.

“…In modern terms, the concept of 'susceptibility' due to both genetic and environmental factors can be compared with the original concept of 'miasm', as an idea of chronic disorders which make humans vulnerable to diseases. Although the concept of miasm is questionable by scientific pathology, 114,115 Hahnemann seemed to equate miasms to the different ways in which humans can be susceptible to various diseases; as scabies and venereal diseases were widespread in the 19th century, considering them e and their suppression with inappropriate medication of that time e as the source of vulnerabilities for other maladies is obvious. 116 Hahnemann also pioneered the concept of disease prevention when he stated that continuous exposure to noxious environmental influences undermines health (Organon, par.…”

“…Homoeopathy is known for curing the chronic diseases from the roots and the basic principles on which it is founded have to be really followed for the rational healing and curing [33] . The phenomenon of suppression is a concept fundamental to the Miasm theory because it explains how a single entity, psora, led to multitude of chronic diseases [34] . But these theories and concepts have to be verified and demonstrated on research grounds.…”

“…This self-perpetuation of disease, as an organization of pathological attractors in a complex system, can be interpreted as an updating of the "miasm" concept of classic homeopathy. [22][23][24] Modern epigenetics, too, appears to be casting new light on the traditional homeopathic tenets, as for example in the recent findings suggesting the transgenerational transmission of altered brain chemistry and behaviour after a single nonlethal exposure to a fungicide chemical in the original male animal. 25 Such data lend general credence to the homeopathic construct that disease tendencies can be inherited as a result of the stressors and illnesses experienced by the parents and grandparents of the current patient.…”
