The contribution of hysteroscopy to the detection malignancy in symptomatic postmenopausal women

Abstract: Hysteroscopic evaluation of endometrial cavity is widely used in cases of abnormal uterine bleeding. The aim of the present study is to compare the hysteroscopic and histological findings in women suffering from postmenopausal bleeding. Between 1990 and 2009, 425 women aged 47-83 years were included in the study. None of the women had received hormonal therapy or had any malignancy in the past. “…TVS and GIS have varying efficiencies with regard to making a diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia [50,51] because this diagnosis relies on a nonspecific thickening of the endometrium. The difficulties involved in using HY to differentiate between hyperplasia and other abnormalities have previously been described [52][53][54] and are even noted by experienced hysteroscopists [45,55].…”

“…In Liberis et al study, specificity, sensitivity and positive predictive values of hysteroscopy to distinguish endometrial benign pathology such as cervical polyps, endometrial fibroma were 100% and specificity, sensitivity and positive predictive values were 88.9%, 42.3%, 94.3% in cases with atrophic endometrium, respectively. 27 Additionally, hysteroscopy had a specificity of 91.3%, a sensitivity of 91.3% and positive predictive values of 99.5% for the detection of endometrial malignancy in their study. 27 In another study rewieving the hysteroscopic reports of 25 menopausal patients treated by hysterectomy, the correlation was found between the pathologic findings on the uterine specimen and the diagnoses obtained by hysteroscopic view.…”
