The control of haemorrhage at the operative site during periradicular surgery

Abstract: CLINICAL TECHNIQUE: Effective apical sealing in endodontic surgery requires a dry root-end cavity to insert the filling material. A number of procedures for controlling haemorrhage have been described in the literature. An improvement of these techniques is proposed in this paper: by using a mixture of surgical wax and fibres of calcium alginate. This device, easy to place, sterile and non-toxic, permits placement of a root-end filling under more favourable conditions.

“…Accordingly, ABS neither increased nor decreased the characteristic features of MTA but exerted a hemostatic effect. The “ideal” hemostatic agent is one that is safe, sterile, easy to apply, visible in the cavity, easy to remove, non-irritant, dissolves and degrades without interfering with periapical healing, and is an integral part of current surgical protocols [ 11 , 17 , 21 ].…”

“…Various local hemostatic agents have been used in oral and maxillofacial surgery [ 11 ]. Ankaferd Blood Stopper® (ABS) (Ankaferd Sağlık ürünleri A.Ş., Istanbul, Turkey) is an extract from medicinal plants that have been used for centuries in Turkish traditional medicine as a hemostatic agent.…”

“…To address this concern, a case report described the addition of calcium alginate fibers (Coalgen™, Brothier, France) to bone wax (bone wax, Ethicon, Sommerville, NJ, USA) prior to placement in an endodontic surgical crypt. This mixture led to good hemostasis and improved removal of the material (181).…”

“…3). A mixture of bone wax and calcium alginate fibres was then applied to the bone cavity to insulate the root end from the surrounding tissues (19). The retrograde cavity was cleaned, dried with paper points and a small quantity of sealer was introduced into the cavity with an endodontic file.…”
