The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory: A Construct Validation Study

Abstract: The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) was examined using a modified version of the Sabers and Whitney model for construct validation. The SEI, Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (CSCS), and Children's Social Desirability Scale (CSDS) were administered to 55 males and 50 females enrolled in six intact fifth-grade classes. Each student also received a teacher rating of self-concept using the Coopersmith Behavioral Academic Assessment Scale (BASE). Regression analyses indicated that the SEI has conv… Show more

“…The global scale score used in these analyses was found to be reliable (α = 0.87). The CSEI has also been shown to have both convergent and discriminant validity (Blascovich & Tomaka, 1991;Chiu, 1985;Johnson, Redfield, Miller, & Simpson, 1983;Roberson & Miller, 1986). An earlier version of the scale was shown to have construct validity (Kokenes, 1974(Kokenes, , 1978.…”

“…Scores can range from 0 to 58 with higher scores reflecting greater self-esteem. The SEI has high test-retest reliability of .88 over a 3-yetis-period (Coopersmith, 1967), as well as convergent and discriminant validity (Johnson, Redfield, Miller, & Simpson, 1983).…”

“…The ® ve factor solution is internally coherent and interpretable despite its low explanation rate. This was only partly supported by previous ® ndings in which the construction of Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory was examined (Johnson et al, 1983;Martin & Coley, 1984;Chiu, 1985;Gibbs & Norwich, 1985;Roberson & Miller, 1986). For the reseach of Keltikangas-Ja È rvinen (1992, pp.…”

“…The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory is still used all over the world and has proven to be applicable in different cultures, even though its translation into various languages is dif® cult and, as a result, several problems have occurred (Diaz, 1984;Mullis et al, 1992;Salminen, 1994). The study of Johnson et al (1983) provided evidence to support the construct validity of the SEI in the ® ve areas identi® ed. The SEI appears to have convergent validity with regard to the Piers± Harris Children' s Self-Concept Scale (CSCS), and the Behavioural Academic Self-Esteem Scale (BASE), to exhibit discriminant validity with regard to the Children' Social Desirability Scale (CSDC), to show sensitivity to differences in achievement level, and to display internal consistency (coef® cient a 5 0.86).…”
