The Copenhagen Metro—observational method at Norreport station

Abstract: The Copenhagen Metro includes six cut and cover stations located in the centre of Copenhagen, the deepest of which is Norreport. The observational method was used to eliminate a level of temporary propping at Norreport station in order to maintain the station excavation programme to suit the arrival of the tunnel-boring machine. This paper describes the development of the monitoring and control system associated with the use of the observational method by a team including the client, the permanent and temporar… Show more

“…The introduction of new design codes stimulated comment and discussion (Beadman, 2006;Lee, 1996a, 1996b) and an innovative design approach was introduced by Osman and Bolton (2006). The importance of monitoring in construction control was described by Holmes et al (2005) and by Roscoe and Twine (2010), while Beadman et al (2001) and Powderham (2002) showed how careful measurements can support design improvements through the use of the observational method. Contributions have described excavations in a wide range of ground conditions including the stiff boulder clays and more recent superficial deposits in the Dublin area (Long, 2002;Long et al, 2012aLong et al, , 2012bLong et al, , 2012c.…”
