The Coprecipitation of Magnesium Iron (III) Hydroxide Powders from Aqueous Solution: Precipitate Compositions and Coprecipitation and Ageing Mechanisms

Abstract: Series of niagiiesiuiii iron( 111) liydroxicles were coprecipitated at ambient temperature froiii different inixed metal cation solutions, at C~t~t = 0.1 M and Mg/Fe, ratios from 4 to 1/4, with sodium hydroxide solution. The relevant single precipitations and the coprecipitations were monitored by potentiometric (pH) titration and the final coprecipitate coiupositions were examined by chemical analysis, infra-red spectrophotometry and tlierinal analysis. The coprecipitates onto aged a-FeOOH were siinple niixtur… Show more

“…The presence of brucite in the vicinity of iron hydroxides was explained by the co-precipitation of brucite during the formation of corrosion products when steel corrodes. The possibility of co-precipitation is based on the work by Packter and Derby [19] who established and examined the mechanisms of co-precipitation of magnesium and iron hydroxides from aqueous solution using potentiometric titration.…”
